It has been a year without museums, galleries, theatres and exhibits, but despite the economic blow to the arts and cultural enterprises, the 2021 30 under 30 art & culture honorees for Europe represent a savvy group of young founders, leaders and specialists who found creative ways to excel during a year of isolation.
Among the honorees is the wonderful Nicole Crentsil, a Ghanaian-British entrepreneur, creative consultant and cultural creator. Before the pandemic, Nicole launched Black Girl Fest Academy in association with Apple and the Mayor of London, a seven-month programme aimed at young Black women looking to get into the events. Given the implications of lockdown and COVID restrictions, Nicole was quickly forced to reimagine the academy in virtual form. By pivoting the festival to online programming, Nicole has used the opportunity to build a platform where its more than 50,000 members can now connect and access professional development tools online.
The experience has given her food for through when it comes to imagining what events will look like post-coronavirus, but this time of reflection has also made her consider how else the industry should be changing.
Despite it being a particularly interesting year for curators, Nicole has embraced this challenge to meet the digital moment, by building an online community when we needed it most. It’s no wonder she has been listed as one of the most successful young European creatives!
